Certification - English as Second Language
Olivet Nazarene University‘s Education programs, accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education, are designed to equip educators with the knowledge they need to make a difference in the life of every K–12 student in our schools. We believe in the influence of teachers.
We also know you lead a busy life. Our accelerated programs are tailored to your unique needs as an adult learner. Classes meet one night per week or on the weekends, a portion of the coursework is completed in collaborative learning teams, an entering class stays together throughout a program and programs can be completed in 24 months or less. At the same time, our programs feature the academic rigor you would expect from a leading liberal arts university.
The English as a Second Language endorsement is designed for the teacher who desires to work more effectively with students who are English language learners. This accelerated endorsement is designed to be completed in less than a year and a half. Candidates are required to compete 22 graduate semester hours of course work consisting of a wide range of content pertaining to English as a Second Language. The field and practicum experiences will be in the context of K-12 schools and will be supervised by qualified ESL personnel working within the assigned school or district.
Current educational “best practices” (e.g. engaged learning, cross cultural education, collegial collaboration, leadership and authentic assessments) are integrated throughout the courses. The ESL endorsement naturally and easily incorporates these best practices as well as interdisciplinary learning. The infusion of theory and practice with a diverse student population in mind has been threaded throughout the curriculum.
